Towards the north of Colombo just minutes away from the airport, is the bustling city of Negombo, which is well known for its old world fishing village atmosphere and sandy beaches. Head to the main hotel beaches here where you can hire water sports equipment to truly enjoy your holiday. A short distance above Negombo is Maravila beach, which is more suited for secluded beach holidays. Even further north is the delightful Kalpitiya beach, which is located on a stunning peninsula, with both lagoon and ocean activities on offer. A few kilometres south of Colombo city is the bustling beach of Mount Lavinia, which has a host of good hotels, restaurants, pubs as well as a lively nightlife. Further down south, as you leave Colombo District, the beaches become more suitable for relaxing holidays as they are less crowded.
Wadduwa beach is a veritable treasure with palm fringed beaches and gorgeous views of the Indian Ocean. This laidback town is relatively underdeveloped compared to neighbouring Kalutara, but boasts exceptionally beautiful beaches and top beach resorts.
