North and East Coast Beaches

The east coast of Sri Lanka provides an opportunity for incredible beach holidays in relatively un-crowded and undeveloped surroundings. The area is a tropical heaven between April and October, which is when the monsoon season affects the south-western beaches. With miles and miles of unspoiled tropical beaches and untamed jungles, visitors will be thrilled with the beautiful beaches here, which are finally accessible after the end of the civil war. Although the area remains pristine and relatively undeveloped, there are several excellent options for accommodation in Passikudah and Trincomalee.

The jewel of the crown on this coastline is Passikudah, which is the most developed of the east coast resorts. Passikudah is a pretty beach with fabulous sands and diving opportunities. This beach is one of the closest to the Cultural Triangle in Sri Lanka, making it an excellent base for those looking for more adventures on their beach holiday. Arugam Bay is situated further south from Passikudah; and is renowned worldwide for surfing with quite a few spots to suit all levels of surfers. The area also has other attractions nearby, such as Yala which is the most popular national park in the island.

Trincomalee is the main city along the east coast, which has one of the largest deep sea ports in the region. Its tree-lined beaches are gorgeous and clean, with shallow waters that are excellent for swimming. Trinco is also renowned for whale watching, fishing and scuba diving. Nilaveli beach is situated just to the north of Trincomalee – this pristine beach is a tranquil haven of miles of pure white sand and soft waves. Another delightful beach near Trinco is Uppaveli – this area provides comfortable accommodation amidst scenic beaches.
