Colombo and the West Coast

The moment you land at the Bandaranaike International Airport, you are greeted with endless coconut palms trees dotting the landscape of Colombo and the West Coast. This is a fitting welcome to this delightful island, which is blessed with over a thousand miles of beautiful golden beaches with crystal clear waters. With excellent beaches lining the west coast, you will be spoilt for choice. The best time to visit the beaches here is during October to April. Towards the north of Colombo just minutes away from the airport, is the bustling city of Negombo, which is well known for its old world fishing village atmosphere and sandy beaches. Head to the main hotel beaches here where you can hire water sports equipment to truly enjoy your holiday. A short distance above Negombo is Maravila beach, which is more suited for secluded beach holidays. A few kilometers south of Colombo city is the bustling beach of Mount Lavinia, which has a host of good hotels, restaurants, pubs as well as a lively nightlife. Mount Lavinia beach gets quite crowded during weekends and holidays, due to its ease of accessibility. Further down south, as you leave Colombo District, the beaches become more suitable for relaxing holidays as they are less crowded. Wadduwa beach is a veritable treasure with palm fringed beaches and gorgeous views of the Indian Ocean. This laid back town is relatively underdeveloped compared to neighboring Kalutara, but boasts exceptionally beautiful beaches and top beach resorts. Kalutara is one of the busiest cities on the west coast of Sri Lanka. In addition to its fine hotels and gorgeous beaches, you can experience other attractions such as the sacred temple near the Kalu Ganga River.
