Tangalle

Tangalle is located deep in the south of Sri Lanka, between Matara and Hambantota. Situated on one of the best bays in the island with a protected reef, Tangalle has been a popular port ever since colonial eras. It is still one of the most important fishing towns in the region, and is a perfect place for those looking for a quiet and relaxed beach holiday.

Tangalle has two amazing beach landscapes. The west part of the town boasts a series of supreme natural bays that lie between rocky headlands and offer sea bathing. In some areas, it is even possible to wade out into the sea at waist height for 50 – 100 feet! The east of Tangalle consists of long sandy beaches, which are more suitable for sunbathing. Tangalle checks the list of everything you need for the perfect beach holiday – sun, sand, surf, snorkel, swim and seclusion!

The usefulness of Tangalle as a maritime hub was discovered by the Dutch, and their era of occupation is still in evidence today with architecture such as the Rest House, Court House and Dutch Fort. The town serves as a base for visits to the rock temple of Mulkirigala, which is the most popular day excursion from Tangalle. This temple consists of a few natural caves with wall paintings and Buddha statues, and requires climbing via a series of rock steps. The view from the top of the rock temple is stunning, you can see far and wide. You can also experience the thrill of a lifetime, witnessing giant sea turtles dragging themselves ashore at night to lay eggs on the beaches of Rekawa, which is a short distance away from Tangalle.

There are several luxury hotels and villas in Tangalle – we recommend Amanwella, Buckingham Place and Ranna 212.
