The North West Coast is famous for the beach resort areas in and around Negombo, Chilaw and the resorts in the Kalpitiya peninsular. They are all situated within a couple of hours of the international airport but away from the mainstream resort areas further south.
Apart from the beach resorts, Negombo is famous for the fish market and fishermen bring their daily catch in the morning for sale. The market also has a wide range of seafood – lobsters, crabs and prawns, which are caught from the lagoon water. Negombo beach provides some of the best views – here you can see catamarans, canoes and modern trawlers gently bouncing on the blue water against a backdrop of palm trees and blue sky.
Further North in the peninsular of Kalpitiya, the highlight is dolphin watching, particularly between November to April, where you can witness several pods of spinner dolphins swimming alongside your boat! Kalpitiya is the best place in Sri Lanka for dolphin watching, with the highest dolphin sighting ratio and largest schools of dolphins swimming close to shore.
