YAPAHUWA

Yapahuwa is situated close to the Cultural Triangle. This rock fortress that was built in the early 1200s was the capital of king Bhuvanekabahu 1.It is similar in concept to the much better known Sigiriya.

It is believed that invading Indians carried away the sacred tooth-relic from Yapahuwa at that time. Yapahuwa’s magnificently carved ornamental staircase, which led up to, the ledge holding its royal palace, is its best point.

The lion near the top of the staircase has been replicated on the RS 10 note. There is also a small museum to the right of the entrance site. Behind the museum is a cave temple, which contains some very old frescoes
