Kalutara located 27 miles from Colombo was once a major centre of the island's spice trade particularly cinnamon.
Today one of the most impressive sights has to be the 'Gangatilaka Vihara’ that can be seen from miles away. This huge Dagoba (Buddhist Temple) is just south of the bridge and marks the site of an ancient Buddhist Temple. Outside the Dagoba stands a small Buddhist shrine and a 'Bo' tree front of which is a till to which passing drivers make offerings to ensure a safe journey.
In season between May and July you will find stalls of mangosteen.
Kalutara is also known for fine basketry and for producing rubber.
Beruwala & Bentota
Several miles from Kalutara some 36 miles from Colombo you will find yourself on one of the most popular beach resorts on the south coast. From this point south and towards the east tourist hotels and small beach resorts are scattered all along this coast.
Beruwala is believed to be the first Moorish settlement on the island established by Arab traders in about 8 AD. A large population of Sri Lanka Moors still lives in this area especially in the 'China' fort district.
Induruwa & Kosgoda
Famous for the turtle hatcheries. Several species of turtle including the Hawksbill, Leatherback, Olive Ridley, Green turtle, Loggerhead and the race Albino, an endangered species. The eggs are incubated and hatched here, and everyday baby turtles are released to the sea. The government does not fund these projects but rely greatly on help from visiting tourists.
Hikkaduwa
60 miles from Colombo, Hikkaduwa, best described
as a haven for surfers, underwater explorers and water sports enthusiasts,
so whatever your preferences, snorkelling, diving, exploring sunken wrecks,
scalding the coral reef on glass bottom boats, Hikkaduwa has much to offer.
