The village
of Haputale is perched right at the southern edge of the hill country.
It lies along a ridge with the land falling away steeply on both sides,
and almost has a feeling of being up in the sky! There are the tea estates,
which cling to the hillsides, and the old plantation bungalows, some of
which have lovely gardens. There's also a pretty little Anglican Church
(St Andrews) on the Bandarawela road. The headstones in the well kept cemetery
make interesting reading.
Bandarawela is a busy market town 10 km north of Haputale noticeably warmer at only 1230m high. It is a good base for exploring the surrounding area. On Sunday morning there is a lively market.
